Il 24 marzo del 1944 trecentotrentacinque persone, tra civili e militari italia ni, vennero massacrati alle Fosse Ardeatine dalle truppe di occupazione della Germania nazista. L'eccidio era un atto di rappresaglia all'attacco partigiano contro le truppe tedesche avvenuto il giorno prima in via Rasella che portò alla morte di 32 militari. Il comando nazista decise di fucilare 10 ostaggi for every German killed.
